Science-Backed Florida Tutoring Programs for Learning Differences

This evidence-based program, backed by more than 15 years of randomized, controlled- trials research, is designed to improve phonological processing by helping the student  integrate four neuro-sensory systems in order to build an efficient process of discriminating speech sounds  in the spoken language, increasing phonological awareness. Scientists call this the “speech to print” approach to empower language and literacy skills, which is the same approach that all good readers must develop. This enhanced phonological awareness is then trained in relation to the alphabetic letters (again, a scientifically proven speech to print approach), which builds each client’s ability to explicitly differentiate each sound within words, including their number,  position,  similarities and differences, which then enables the client to know if they added, omitted, repeated, substituted, or reversed sounds in words when reading or spelling. Such enhanced phonological awareness, and consequent reading and spelling skills empower students to self-correct in reading, spelling and speaking.

Building on the improved phonological awareness and auditory working memory established in the NOW! Foundations program, the research-based NOW! Mental Imagery program empowers your ability to better understand and remember spoken or written language.  Students  will develop their ability to  encode  and  recall complex strings of information, and learn to further manipulatewords  to create mental “movies” . This mental imagery treatment program successfully trains students of all ages in how to  create  mental imagery when reading, listening and thinking. These new skills can improve short-term memory, long-term memory, comprehension, reasoning and higher order problem-solving skills. Albert Einstein was well-known to use mental imagery to fully guide his reasoning and problem-solving. Once mental imagery skills are empowered to improve speaking and listening skills, a student wil be able  to read  using mental imagery which will improve their ability to write sentences, paragraphs, essays and research papers, which is the primary focus  of the next program.

This research-based program takes the improved auditory working memory of NOW! Foundations and the improved mental imagery and comprehension skills of the NOW! Mental Imagery program and applies those empowered skills to a multi-sensory approach to writing. NOW! Grammar and Writing® uses auditory, visual and kinesthetic multisensory, structured and systematic training lessons to empower writing skills. Students are guided to fully understand the role of individual words in sentences (grammar) and how to concretely manipulate them  to change the meaning of sentences and  how to change the order of sentences to produce well-written paragraphs and the same for organizing paragraphs to create interesting, meaningful and vivid stories, research papers or essays.

A far more advanced skill than reading, spelling, writing and comprehension is a true “foreign language” called Mathematics. Math is the last of the four NOW! Programs® trained at a TMC clinic and builds on the three prior programs’ empowerments. NOW! Math Concept Imagery® uses a language-based approach to help students grasp and truly understand foundational math concepts. This enables the student to interpret, express and reason through math problems using both language skills and a full understanding of the numerical system. Students will progress from simple and concrete mathematical concepts to more abstract and formulaic aspects so they can excel in elementary, middle, high school or even college level math courses.

This therapy improves foundational language skills (phonological processing) that can cause learning difficulties like dyslexia. (Testing will determine if SLT is needed) This therapy can help with sounding out (decoding) words, spelling, and more.

OT provides specific instructive therapy that can assist clients in overcoming sensory processing difficulties. These sensory processing difficulties occur in approximately 50% of clients and may involve oral-motor and motor-planning difficulty, fine and gross motor delays, visual perception delays, sensory hypersensitivity, and/or somatosensory deficits (lack of body awareness).

Our team of professionals will collaborate on and provide options for interventions which may or may not include medication for behavioral management of attention, mood or behavior disorders.

Each therapy hour, the client’s attention is monitored and reported. Non-pharmacological measures designed to maximize attention and arousal are integrated into all language and OT sessions. In cases where these do not suffice, medication may be recommended.

Testing is a multi-phase process to determine if you or your child are a good candidate for our range of services. The assessment process typically takes between two and ten weeks to complete and involves information gathering from various sources including testing, interviews, and meetings.
